Artist Interview
Welcome to UPM's first Artist Interview. King Cosmic is an Idaho-based graffiti artist who has successfully transferred this outdoor wall art onto canvases, skateboards, and other surfaces. His work is strikingly colorful and vibrant. His pieces demonstrate great conceptual consideration and artistic insight.

When did you decide you were an artist or simply realized you loved creating art?

I've always liked drawing. It's one of those things that I remember doing for as long as I've had a conscious thought. As far as being an artist, I'd say around 15. That’s when I truly started putting out work that started living up to my critical eye.

Are there other artists who have influenced you?
I've been influenced by a lot of people: Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, Inkslingr to name a few. I always get inspiration from other artists.

What mediums have you used, i.e. painting, sketching, multimedia?
I try to use whatever is readily available. Pencil, pen and markers are my main diet
of utensils. They are the easiest to use and work with minimal effort. Spray-paint, paint markers, acrylics, charcoal, chalk, oil pastels. They all have their niche. I've been working on getting my airbrush and digital work going lately.

What drew you to graffiti art? Why did you decide to use canvases and other surfaces other than walls to create your work?
I've been writing graffiti for a number of years. I've always been drawn to the trains. As a kid I remember sitting by the train and just watching every train that had a scribble, bomb, or piece on it. That's how I met my buddy; he and I met in a train yard. Canvases and other surfaces are just how I try to make some pocket change for my craft. Some people don't believe in getting paid for doing something that's technically ''guerrilla marketing'' or anti-establishment. But I know I need to put food on my table somehow.

Where/how do you get your ideas for new pieces?
I get influence from everything and everywhere. Everything goes through my filter and I bleed that on the paper accordingly. I tend to look at things with an off-tilt attitude. Where you see a clean building, I see a potential canvas.

What do you hope others will see in your art?
All I expect them to see is whatever they want to see. Maybe they see and appreciate an ability they don't have. Maybe it’s the beauty of the letters and characters, how simply they can be turned and twisted into something unexpected.

Where would you like to see your art displayed?
Everywhere and anywhere. I love seeing something I created in the streets, a gallery, on some kid’s skate deck, on a wall, or even a mural in somebody's house. I'm just a man on my grind. I'm not picky. Any attention is good attention. I'm just glad somebody besides me can enjoy the things that sprawl from my soul.

How can people purchase your artwork?
They can reach me through E-mail.
Cosmicnine@live.com. Or my phone number is 208-895-0688. I can also be found on Facebook via King Cosmic and my deviant art page. I'm more than willing to do custom work as long as materials are provided.
